A Basic Solar System
A basic solar system consists of:
- Solar panels
- A solar charge controller
- An inverter (If A/C power is needed)
- A D/C fuse block or receptacle (if D/C voltage is needed)
- The Solar Panels are connected to the Solar Charge Controller with appropriate size wire protected with the appropriate size fuse.
- The Solar Charge Controller is connected to the battery with the appropriate size wire and fuse.
- The is Battery connected to the Inverter with the appropriate size wire and fuse.
- The battery is also connected to the D/C fuse block with the appropriate size wire and fuse.
Note: The solar panels and batteries can be wired either in series or parallel.
Inverter
Below find the size Inverter you plan to use. Beside each inverter size you will find the appropriate wire and fuse size to connect to the battery. Example: for a 1000 watt inverter use 4 gauge wire and a 100 amp fuse.
Inverter Wire size Fuse
500 watt 8 gauge wire 50 amp fuse
1000 watt 4 gauge wire 100 amp fuse
1500 watt 2 gauge wire 150 amp fuse
2000 watt 1/0 gauge wire 200 amp fuse
2500 watt 2/0 gauge wire 250 amp fuse
3000 watt 4/0 gauge wire 300 amp fuse
Solar Charge Controller
Below find the size Solar charge controller you plan to use. Beside each charge controller size you will find the appropriate wire and fuse size to connect to the battery. Example: for a 40 amp charge controller use 8 gauge wire and a 50 amp fuse.
Charge controller Wire size fuse
20 amp 12 gauge wire 25 amp fuse
30 amp 10 gauge wire 35 amp fuse
40 amp 8 gauge wire 50 amp fuse
60 amp 6 gauge wire 75 amp fuse
